News Summary (Jan 5th)

  • First Flights for 2009: Happy New Year and happy flying to all! It's been a spectacular holiday period with an incredibly extended period of high pressure that has given us a very positive start to 2009. ...And the current forecast is for more to come.

  • Club Membership: Club subscription for 2009 is now due, with a cheaper rate if you pay before the AGM. All details on the 2009 Application Form or email membership@llsclub.org.uk for information.

  • January Club Night: Wednesday 14th January sees the next club night at the Tinto Hotel with a talk on flying in the Himalayas. Full details still to be confirmed and will be posted on the LLSC Group once finalised.

  • Winter Works: The recent run of flyable conditions has prevented any serious attempt at the planned winter works, so the tree clearing and drainage work is still to be done. Watch this space for details (and if anyone has access to a digger that could be used, contact info@llsclub.org.uk.)

  • SHPF Gathering - Last places available: Have you booked your place for the SHPF Gathering? This is now just a couple of weeks away and only a few places left. It offers a great opportunity to test your reserve and then learn how to repack it yourself, as well as simply being very good fun. And this year we have some fascinating flying seminars and lectures to make it an unmissable weekend. Full details on the booking form.

  • 2008 News Archive: See the 2008 News Archive for all news items posted during 2008.

Articles

Every month we will publish a new article, if available of course, so the club is always looking for interesting articles on Scottish flying. This month we feature a very relevant discussion on Spring Flying.
There is also an archive of previously published articles, both recent and not so recent (do you remember the Flying Scot?).

Sites Guide

The club Sites Guide provides a list of available sites by wind direction (or wind directions by site) along with the usual general site info.
This is now in the process of being revised and incorporated into the new website with the addition of more sites to the guide. Watch out for the new version when it becomes available.

In the meantime, how about a wee teaser? The best-known LLSC sites are Tinto and Broughton, both near Biggar, but there are also some really good lesser-known sites too. Anyone recognise these? Send your answers to info@llsclub.org.uk

About LLSC

Lanarkshire and Lothian Soaring Club promotes safe flying for paragliders and hangliders in Scotland, and in particular around Glasgow and Edinburgh. Safety comes with experience, and all pilots are encouraged to improve their skills and knowledge through regular club activities including training and coaching sessions.

The club hosts a national forum for all Scottish pilots and those interested in free flying in Scotland.

Flying in Scotland

Scotland is a beautiful country to fly in with surprisingly many different options for such a small area. The current Scottish distance record for a paraglider is 126km, and was cut short due to running out of land! As a whole, there are very few airspace restrictions across the country, with the exception of the Central Belt between Edinburgh and Glasgow. Please ensure you are fully aware of any agreements and potential restrictions in force before you fly.

LLSC is an active member in the Scottish Hangliding and Paragliding Federation (SHPF).
